Light-and-Shadow Stealth
Light-and-shadow stealth measures illumination and sound as concrete quantities, so standing in darkness or moving across soft ground genuinely changes whether guards can perceive the player.
Brightness at the player's position is sampled and reported, often through a visible gem or meter, and guards test against that value rather than against a scripted trigger. Sound behaves the same way: footsteps carry differently on stone, wood, carpet and water, and slowing down quietens them. Water arrows extinguish torches and moss arrows lay quiet ground, so lighting and materials become a system the player edits.
Looking Glass Studios shipped Thief: The Dark Project in 1998, having built a first-person game around avoidance at a moment when the perspective meant shooting. Their engine could report light values and surface materials cheaply, which made those properties usable as rules rather than decoration. Design followed the technology: if darkness can be measured, a level can be composed in light the way another game composes cover.
Lighting stopped being art direction and became level design, a shift visible in every stealth game since and in how immersive sims treat environments as systems. Graphics brought the costs. Modern dynamic lighting makes a stable, readable darkness value hard to guarantee, and players resent being spotted in a shadow that looked solid. Several later games abandoned measured light for scripted visibility simply because it is easier to tune.
