Physics & Simulation

Ten mechanics from the moment a world stops being scripted and starts obeying rules, with all the emergence and all the breakage that implies.

Mechanics 10 Earliest 1982 Latest 2017

Flight Simulator makes the founding commercial argument in 1982: aerodynamics modelled for their own sake, no score attached, simulation itself as the entertainment. Gran Turismo repeats the argument for cars in 1997, modelling tyre load and weight transfer seriously enough that racing games become an equipment hobby. Both descend directly from Spacewar!'s collision primitive, which is the whole family's root.

Visibility arrives with Jurassic Park: Trespasser, whose Ragdoll Physics simulate bodies rather than animating them and become the first widely legible sign that a physics engine is running underneath. Red Faction's Destructible Geometry attacks the designer's assumption of a fixed floor plan, which is precisely why players liked it. Half-Life 2 turns the simulation into a puzzle vocabulary with Rigid-Body Puzzle Physics and then hands the player a Physics Manipulation Tool, one object that teaches an entire system in ten seconds.

Generativity is the reward and the problem. Far Cry 2's Propagating Fire and Fluids spread by wind and terrain, producing hazards no designer scripted and weapons no designer sanctioned. Minecraft's Editable Voxel Terrain proposes the simplest possible world model and gets the most generative one. Breath of the Wild's Systemic Elemental Chemistry makes fire, wind, water, metal, and electricity interact by rule everywhere, which means shipping puzzle solutions nobody enumerated.

Every entry here re-argues the same trade: simulation buys solutions the designer never wrote, and pays for them in guarantees the designer can no longer make. BeamNG.drive's Soft-Body Deformation spends the whole budget on fidelity as spectacle. Breath of the Wild spends it on the player being right in a way the team never anticipated.
