Destructible Geometry
Destructible geometry lets players remove or collapse parts of a level's structure during play, so walls, floors and cover become consumable terrain rather than the fixed boundaries of a designed space.
Level surfaces become mutable. Explosives and heavy weapons carve holes, remove supports or delete whole sections, and the game recomputes navigation, line of sight and collision to match. Approaches range from fully deformable geometry to pre-authored breakable pieces that swap in damaged versions, and most shipping games use the second, because it is predictable, cheap to compute and far kinder to multiplayer synchronisation.
Volition shipped Red Faction in 2001 with technology that let players tunnel through rock and blow doorways in walls, marketed openly as the reason the game existed. Its appeal was contrarian: a shooter promising to undermine every assumption a level designer makes about where players will be. Hardware of the period could only support the effect in specific materials, so the freedom was noticeably bounded in practice.
Losing the guarantee of a fixed floor plan is exactly why destruction stays attractive and why it is used sparingly. Breakable walls make cover temporary, defeat memorised map knowledge, and hand players tools designers cannot anticipate; they also break pathfinding, complicate network code, and can leave a match in a bowl of rubble with nothing left to hide behind. Modern designs usually destroy surfaces while preserving structure.
