Systemic elemental chemistry defines global rules for how fire, water, wind, metal and electricity interact, so any combination of materials behaves the same way wherever the player finds it.

Objects carry material properties and the engine resolves contact between them. Wood burns, fire climbs slopes and follows wind, metal conducts current and attracts lightning during storms, water conducts and extinguishes, and heat rises to lift anything light enough to catch it. Rules are few and universal, so puzzles have solutions the designers never enumerated, and hazards apply to the player exactly as they apply to enemies.

Nintendo EPD built the model into The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in 2017, drawing on a decade of physics-driven design and on the propagation systems that had appeared in open-world shooters. Its purpose was navigational as much as combative: in a game whose central promise is that any hill can be climbed, players need rules they can reason about rather than a list of permitted interactions.

Consistency is what makes a large world worth experimenting in, and this approach produced the strongest recent argument that systemic design beats authored puzzle content. Costs are considerable. Every new object must be given properties that behave sensibly against all the others, testing becomes combinatorial, and set-piece design gets harder because players will solve a scene in ways the scene was never built to survive.
