Editable Voxel Terrain
Editable voxel terrain models the world as a uniform grid of blocks that can each be removed or placed, making landscape a material the player edits rather than a surface they cross.
Everything is cells. Each grid position holds a material identifier or nothing at all, the renderer builds visible surfaces from the boundaries between them, and mining and building are simply writes into that array. Uniformity is where the power comes from: physics, lighting, storage, generation and network synchronisation all operate on one simple structure, and a rule written for one block type applies across the entire world.
Markus Persson began Minecraft in 2009 after playing Infiniminer, an earlier block-mining game whose grid he has repeatedly credited as the direct inspiration. Mojang's contribution was to attach survival, crafting and generation to that grid so editing terrain became a means rather than an end. Voxel representations themselves are much older, used in medical imaging and earlier terrain renderers, so the novelty lay in the design around them.
Uniform editable matter turned out to be the most generative world model the medium has found, because one mechanic supports mining, building, farming, traps, circuitry and art with no special cases. Costs are aesthetic and computational: everything is cubic unless considerable work goes into hiding it, and worlds of any size demand chunked streaming, level-of-detail tricks and hard limits on how much may change at once.
