Physics Manipulation Tool
A physics manipulation tool is an in-game device that lets the player grab, hold and launch simulated objects directly, turning an abstract system into something you point at the world.
Interaction is mediated by a single object. Holding the trigger picks up whatever the reticle covers and keeps it suspended at a fixed distance; releasing drops it, and a second input fires it with force. Because the tool works on anything the simulation owns, it doubles as a teaching device, giving players a safe way to discover mass, fragility and reaction before that knowledge is required to progress.
Valve introduced the gravity gun in Half-Life 2 in 2004, directly after chapters that had taught the underlying physics through seesaws and floating barrels. Handing players one tool that operates on those rules everywhere solved a discoverability problem, since a systemic world is worth nothing if nobody notices what is systemic. Putting it in the hands rather than in a menu also made the system feel like equipment instead of a mode.
One object can teach a whole system, and that lesson outlived the specific weapon. Later games hand out magnet tools, freeze rays and telekinesis for the same reason, and virtual reality made direct grabbing the default rather than a special item. Risks are familiar: a strong manipulation tool trivialises puzzles that assumed walking, and it encourages players to carry a solved solution into the next room.
