Systemic Solution Space
Systemic solution spaces build a game from consistent interacting rules rather than authored answers, so problems can be solved in ways the designers never anticipated and never wrote down.
Rules are general rather than local. Objects have physical properties, characters have senses and allegiances, fire spreads, water conducts, and a key is one option among several. Because those rules apply everywhere instead of only where a designer expected them, a locked door might be opened, bypassed through a window, avoided entirely, or made irrelevant by persuading someone else to open it. Designers author obstacles; solutions emerge.
Blue Sky Productions built Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss in 1992 as a first-person role-playing game with real geometry, physical objects and characters who could be talked to rather than only fought. Ambition rather than constraint drove the work, and the studio's later projects carried the approach forward. Its founding promise is a contract: if something looks like it should work, the simulation ought to honour the attempt.
Games built this way produce a strong sense of ownership, because a solution the player invented feels like theirs, and they support replaying in ways linear designs cannot. Severe costs explain the small output. Interacting systems generate bugs and unwinnable states, testing is combinatorial, and much of what gets built is never seen by any one player. Commercial results have been inconsistent enough that studios keep abandoning the form.
