Procedural Loot Tables
Procedural loot tables assemble items as they drop, combining a base type with randomly rolled modifiers, so two weapons of the same kind can differ enormously in quality and effect.
Each drop is built rather than chosen. A base item is picked from a table weighted by monster type and level, then affixes are rolled onto it: extra damage, resistances, attribute bonuses, each within a numeric range. Rarity tiers determine how many affixes appear, and colour coding signals the tier at a glance. Two items with identical names and artwork can therefore be worthless or run-defining.
Blizzard North built the system into Diablo in 1996, solving a content problem with arithmetic. A hand-authored item list has a fixed size and is exhausted in a single playthrough, while a generator with a few hundred components produces effectively unlimited variants. Randomised treasure was already standard in tabletop role-playing rules and earlier dungeon crawlers; what Diablo added was speed, presentation and an unbroken stream of drops.
Loot became the reason to keep playing, and a genre reorganised itself around drop rates, trading and endgame farming. Consequences reach past design. Variable rewards on a fast cycle hold attention unusually well, a property later attached directly to money, and item value grew legible enough to trade for real currency. Whether the loop is craft or conditioning is argued today in almost identical terms.
