Adaptive Dynamic Music
Adaptive dynamic music follows the player, transitioning between arrangements on musical boundaries so a score can change with the scene without cutting off or restarting a track.
Music is stored as sequences with marked branch points rather than as a finished recording. When the game state changes, the system waits for the next musically sensible moment, then moves to a matching arrangement, adding instruments, shifting key, or crossing into a variation. Because transitions land on the beat, the score sounds composed rather than switched, and a theme can follow a character from room to room.
Lucasfilm Games shipped Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge in 1991 with an interactive music system built by the studio's own composers for exactly this problem. Adventure games created the need, since a player may stand in one room for a minute or twenty and the music has to survive both. Sequenced formats made it possible, because a score held as instructions can be rearranged in ways a recording cannot.
Scores stopped looping and started responding, which is now standard practice and has produced its own compositional discipline of layers, stems and vertical arrangement. Authorship pays for it. Music written to recombine must work in many orders, which limits long-form development, and a dynamic system can smear a strong cue into wallpaper. Composers still argue about how much control to hand over to a state machine.
