Deflect-Focused Posture Combat

Deflect-focused posture combat replaces dodging with well-timed deflection, filling an opponent's posture bar until their guard breaks, so duels are won by holding rhythm rather than by managing distance.

Introduced 2019 Origin Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Developer FromSoftware Later adopters 2

Victory runs through the posture bar, not the health bar. Blocking adds posture damage, deflecting adds far more and costs the defender almost nothing, and a broken guard opens a lethal blow regardless of remaining health. Retreating lets an opponent recover, which inverts the usual advice; safe play means staying in range and meeting attacks on the beat, with unblockable moves forcing a different answer at intervals.

FromSoftware built Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in 2019 from two of its own inheritances, the parry window fighting games had refined since the late 1990s and the stagger bar the studio introduced a decade earlier. Removing character builds and equipment scaling made the change workable: with no statistics to hide behind, timing becomes the only variable, and difficulty can be tuned entirely through enemy rhythm and recovery.

Combat moved closer to a rhythm game than a spacing game, which produced both the design's admirers and its detractors. Players who internalise the beat describe the most legible melee system in the genre; players who cannot find it have no alternative route, because there is nothing to overlevel. That absence of a fallback is the honest cost of taking statistics out of a difficulty curve entirely.
