First-Person Parkour Flow
First-person parkour flow makes running, vaulting and wall-running the central verbs of a game seen from inside the body, with visible arms and legs to anchor the motion.
Camera sits at head height and pitches with each footfall, hands and feet enter the frame during vaults and rolls, and the controls bind up and down to context-sensitive actions rather than to jump alone. Momentum carries between moves, so a clean line is faster than a hesitant one. Level geometry is signposted with colour or light, because a first-person view cannot show a player where their feet will land.
DICE released Mirror's Edge in 2008 with a deliberately narrow premise: a chase game whose interesting decisions concern routes rather than weapons. Putting a body in first person required animation and camera work that shooters had never needed, since a shooter's player is effectively a floating gun. Motion sickness, landing readability and the impossibility of seeing your own feet were all treated as design problems to be solved.
Flow-based first person proved that traversal alone can carry a game, and it fed directly into shooters that wanted mobility. It also exposed the form's ceiling. Precision platforming without a visible avatar is punishing, hard signposting can make a world feel like a set of instructions, and repeated failure destroys the very momentum the design exists to produce. Games since have mostly used it as a layer, not a genre.
