Everything the game contains occupies one fixed frame. There is no camera motion, no off-screen simulation, and no map larger than the display; objects that reach an edge bounce, die, or wrap. Since the player sees the whole system at once, difficulty has to come from density, speed and timing rather than from concealment. Reading the board and reading the game are the same act, which is why these designs stay legible to a stranger.

Atari's Pong in 1972 ran on discrete logic rather than a processor, with no memory to store a world and no way to redraw one. What the circuit could do was position two paddles, a ball and a score, and that budget defined the shape of the game. Coin-operated cabinets reinforced it: a passerby had to understand the whole thing from a few seconds of watching over someone's shoulder.

Confinement produced a design culture built on escalation and pattern rather than exploration or story, and it made the arcade's economics work, since a two-minute game needs no context. What it foreclosed was scale of every kind: no travel, no persistence, no place to hide information. Later games recovered the form deliberately, using the fixed frame as a way to promise the player that all the evidence is already visible.
