Haptic Force Feedback
Haptic force feedback sends information through the controller as vibration or resistance, giving games a channel that costs no screen space and requires no reading or translation.
Motors, and later voice coils and actuators, are driven by the game with a strength and duration chosen per event. A hit, an engine, a footstep on gravel or a low warning can each have a signature the hands learn. Because the channel is neither visual nor verbal, it works while the player is looking elsewhere, and it carries emotional weight out of all proportion to its bandwidth. Overuse flattens it into noise.
Nintendo EAD shipped Star Fox 64 in 1997 with the Rumble Pak, an accessory that bolted a motor onto the controller, and used it for impacts and damage in a game where the player is constantly under fire. Force feedback existed earlier in arcade cabinets and flight hardware; a cheap console accessory made it ordinary. Within a generation vibration was built into standard controllers and assumed by nearly every game.
Touch turned out to be good at exactly what the screen is bad at: confirming a hit that happened off-frame, communicating surface and weight, and building tension without a sound cue. It also became an accessibility feature, and later a subtle one, as actuators improved enough to suggest texture and resistance. Downsides are cost, battery drain, and a long history of rumble used as generic emphasis.
