Graded Analog Input
Graded analog input reads how far a stick is pushed rather than whether a direction is pressed, so speed, angle and pressure all become things a player can express.
Stick position is sampled as a pair of values with a dead zone near the centre and a curve mapping deflection to output. Character can therefore tiptoe, walk or sprint from one control, and a turn can be a slight adjustment rather than a snap to eight directions. Designers gain a continuous input channel and the obligation to decide how the curve feels, since that mapping is the game's handwriting.
Nintendo's 1996 controller for Super Mario 64 put an analog stick in the middle of a mass-market gamepad, because free movement in a 3D volume cannot be expressed with a digital pad. Analog controls existed long before, in flight yokes, paddles and home computer joysticks; what changed was that a whole console generation standardised on them, which made designing for graded input a default rather than a special case.
Continuous input made stealth speeds, driving lines, precise aim and expressive animation possible, and it eventually carried triggers, pressure and gyroscopes alongside it. It also created a category of problems: dead zones, drift, response curves and accessibility issues a digital pad never had. Some genres pointedly refuse it, since fighting games and precise platformers often prefer the certainty of a switch that is either closed or open.
