Analog Free-Roam 3D Movement
Analog free-roam 3D movement lets a third-person character run in any direction at any speed through an open volume, with a camera that has to be designed as carefully as the character.
Stick direction is interpreted relative to the camera rather than the world, so pushing forward means away from the viewer wherever the viewer happens to be. Character turns toward the chosen heading with its own momentum, and speed is proportional to how far the stick is pushed. Because the camera defines what forward means, the camera becomes part of the control scheme, and every reframing it performs is felt as an input problem.
Nintendo EAD's Super Mario 64 launched in 1996 alongside a controller with an analog stick, and it had to answer a question nobody had settled: how to move a character freely in a volume and still see. Solutions were invented in public. Camera lives on a virtual arm with collision, the player can nudge it, and level geometry is shaped so the interesting route and the readable angle agree.
Grammar established here still runs almost all third-person action games, and it made possible the open worlds, climbing systems and lock-on combat that followed. Price was paid in complexity: cameras fail, depth is hard to judge without shadows, and a jump that was trivially readable in profile becomes a guess. Decades of design work since have gone into hiding those problems rather than solving them outright.
