Trailing Follow Camera
A trailing follow camera is a viewpoint that chases the player character with its own physics, collision and framing rules, rather than sitting at a fixed distance behind them.
Camera is treated as an object. It has a target position behind and above the character, a spring that pulls it there, collision so it does not enter walls, and logic to swing around obstacles or reframe during a fall. Player usually gets partial manual control on top. Every one of those behaviours changes the meaning of the control stick, because forward is defined relative to wherever the camera ended up.
Nintendo EAD had to solve this for Super Mario 64 in 1996, the first time a large audience moved a character freely through 3D space. Nothing about it was obvious. A camera on a rigid pole clips through geometry, one that snaps instantly is nauseating, and one that always faces the action removes any ability to look ahead. Fiction papered over the machinery by making the camera a character with a name.
Camera work became a permanent discipline. Studios now employ people whose job is framing, and third-person camera failures remain among the most common complaints about otherwise finished games. Solutions since have mostly narrowed the problem rather than settled it, through lock-on, corridors, shoulder cameras or scripted angles. Whether the player or the system should own the view is still argued title by title.
