Fixed Cinematic Camera
Fixed cinematic cameras place a 3D scene under pre-authored viewpoints that cut as the player moves, giving a designer control over framing at the cost of the player's control over sight.
Each room is assigned one or more static camera positions, often over prerendered backgrounds with only characters drawn in real time. Movement is relative to the character rather than the view, so a cut can reverse what a direction on the stick means. Designer decides exactly what is visible, when it appears and how much of the room is withheld, and the player has no way to look around a corner.
Capcom's Resident Evil in 1996 used the technique because early 3D hardware could not render a detailed mansion in real time, but it could composite characters over a still image. Constraint became the aesthetic. Angles borrowed from horror cinema, and a cut that reveals a corridor already occupied does work no monster animation can. Prerendered art also let environments look far better than the era's polygon budget allowed.
Framing control gave games their first reliable dread, and it survives wherever a designer wants authorship over what is seen. Costs are well documented: tank controls exist partly to survive the cuts, combat becomes imprecise when an enemy is off-frame, and modern audiences read the scheme as friction. Remakes tend to drop it for shoulder cameras, which is itself an argument about whether the frustration was the point.
