Room-Scale VR Presence

Room-scale VR presence tracks a player's head and hands in physical space, making the camera an extension of the neck and the hands into direct manipulators of the world.

Headset and controllers are tracked in six degrees of freedom, so leaning, crouching and reaching become inputs the game cannot ignore. Objects have to be grabbable from any angle, held at any orientation, and thrown with real arm velocity. Because a player can put their face anywhere, no geometry can be a facade, and every convention built on a controlled camera needs rebuilding from scratch.

Valve released Half-Life: Alyx in 2020, several years into consumer VR, as a full-length game rather than a demonstration. Prior attempts had exposed the specific unsolved problems: locomotion that does not induce sickness, hands that interact without a button for every verb, and pacing for a medium where players stop to examine shelves. Answers were mostly conservative, including teleport movement options and heavy signposting of interactable objects.

Presence changes what identical content means, since scale, threat and intimacy all read differently once the body is involved. It also imposes hard limits: sessions are short, comfort constrains movement, hardware audiences are small, and no amount of fidelity fixes the fact that a player's living room has walls. Whether this becomes a platform or stays a specialised mode is unresolved, and the economics remain unproven.
