Climb-Anything Stamina Traversal

Climb-anything stamina traversal makes nearly every surface in a world scalable and limits ascent only with a draining meter, replacing invisible walls with an economic decision about routes.

Introduced 2017 Origin The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Developer Nintendo EPD Later adopters 4

Rather than tagging specific climbable geometry, the system treats slope as the test: if a surface is steeper than walking allows, the character grips it and a stamina bar begins to drain. Refilling requires ledges, food or upgrades, and rain makes hands slip. Player weighs distance against the meter constantly, so the question is not whether a mountain can be climbed but whether this attempt has enough left in it.

Nintendo EPD's Breath of the Wild in 2017 set out to make an open world where curiosity is always rewarded, which is incompatible with terrain that refuses to be touched. Universal climbing removed the need to author paths and let the map be designed as landscape rather than as corridors. Stamina supplied the missing tension, turning what would otherwise be a free pass into a resource problem with visible costs.

Handing route-finding back to the player made a very large map feel personal, since two people cross it differently, and it quietly deleted the fence, the ledge marker and the yellow paint. Side effects followed. Climbing trivialises many encounters, level designers lose control of approach angles, and long ascents are dull by construction. Games that copied the meter often kept the tedium without the underlying promise about terrain.
