Non-Euclidean Portal Space
Non-Euclidean portal space lets a player join two distant surfaces so that walking or falling into one emerges from the other, with momentum carried intact across the seam.
Two openings are placed on valid surfaces and rendered as live views through each other, so the space beyond is genuinely visible rather than a texture. Anything entering one exits the other with its velocity rotated into the new orientation, which means a long fall becomes horizontal speed. Puzzles are built from that conversion: the question is not where a door is, but where the player can make one.
Valve released Portal in 2007, developing it from a student project whose central trick was a rendering and physics problem more than a level design one. Engine had to draw recursive views, carry objects across the boundary and keep collision consistent while a player straddles a hole. Restraint made it work, since a short game with few portal-friendly surfaces keeps the space comprehensible instead of unbounded.
Beyond its own puzzles, the idea proved that spatial rules can be the content of a game rather than the container for it, and that players will reason confidently about geometry that does not exist. Generalising it is hard, which is why so few games followed directly. Portals break navigation meshes, AI, audio and level streaming, and a designer who allows them everywhere loses control of pacing entirely.
