Cross-Platform Play
Cross-platform play allows people on consoles, computers and phones to share matches and friend lists, breaking the convention that each platform maintains a separate, walled player population.
Matchmaking pools merge across hardware, so a console player and a phone player can queue together and see each other on a friends list. Making that work needs one account system layered above the platform accounts, a single networking build, and rules for the input gap, usually by grouping controller users together or by tuning aim assist. Purchases and progression follow the account rather than the device.
Barriers were commercial rather than technical. Platform holders treated their installed base as a moat, and certification practice long discouraged mixing. Epic Games pushed Fortnite Battle Royale onto every device it could reach in 2018 and made exclusion visible to players, who complained loudly to whichever platform was blocking them. Policy shifted within months. Earlier cross-platform experiments existed, but this is the case that changed the defaults.
Lifespan is where the effect shows. A merged pool keeps queue times short, which keeps smaller and older games playable long past the point at which a fragmented population would have collapsed. Competitive costs are real, since mouse aim and controller aim assist do not balance cleanly, and many games now let players opt out of mixed input, quietly rebuilding the walls the feature was meant to remove.
