Shrinking-Circle Battle Royale

Shrinking-circle battle royale drops many players into one map without equipment and forces them together using a boundary that contracts on a timer until a single survivor remains.

Introduced 2017 Origin PUBG: Battlegrounds Developer PUBG Corporation Direct forks 2 Later adopters 4

Around a hundred players enter a large map carrying nothing. Weapons, armour and healing lie scattered as ground loot, so the opening minutes are a scramble that decides how the next twenty go. A playable zone marked on the map shrinks in timed steps, and standing outside it drains health. Death ends the match for that player. Late rounds compress dozens of survivors into a field the size of a village square.

Attribution here is genuinely contested. PUBG: Battlegrounds launched in 2017 and set the commercial template, but its designer had already built battle royale modes as mods for military simulation games and had consulted on an earlier standalone attempt, while Minecraft servers ran last-player-standing events for years before that. Name and premise come from a Japanese novel and its film adaptation. What 2017 added was polish, scale, and a streaming audience ready for it.

Geometry solved a pacing problem deathmatch never answered: without a closing boundary, hiding is optimal and matches do not end. Consequences run both ways. Sessions became long and unrepeatable, so a bad landing costs half an hour, and skill shares the outcome with luck of the draw. Nearly every large shooter added a mode within three years, which flattened the variety of what those games had otherwise been.
