In-Game Automap
An in-game automap draws the level as the player walks it, converting movement into a persistent overhead diagram of rooms, corridors and doors that can be consulted at any moment.
Geometry a player has seen is recorded and drawn from above as lines, usually on a toggled overlay with position and facing marked. Unvisited space stays blank, so the map is a record of where someone has been rather than a plan of where to go. Later versions annotate heavily: door colours, item pickups, room names, boss locations, and in some games marks the player places by hand.
id Software shipped one in Doom in 1993, at a point when levels had outgrown what a player could hold in memory. Corridors looped, keys sat behind doors two rooms back, and people were drawing grids on graph paper, a habit inherited from dungeon crawlers. Ultima Underworld had already offered an in-fiction map the year before, so the idea was in circulation. Doom supplied a fast, legible version bound to one key.
Externalising spatial memory made large, non-linear levels viable for players who would otherwise get lost and stop, and it turned the map itself into a design surface: completion percentages, rooms visible but unreachable, the shape of a world readable at a glance. Something was lost too. Attention to landmarks stopped being necessary, and a player's mental model of a space now often lives on the overlay rather than in their head.
