Spatial Inventory Grid
A spatial inventory grid gives every item a shape and footprint in a fixed rectangle of cells, so carrying capacity becomes a packing problem rather than a list with a weight total.
Space is a grid. A sword occupies three cells, a ring one, a two-handed axe six, and awkward shapes strand gaps that nothing else fits into. Deciding what to keep means comparing value per cell, rearranging, and occasionally abandoning a good item because it will not sit anywhere. Chests, belts and larger bags become upgrades in themselves, since the resource actually being managed is room.
Blizzard North shipped Diablo in 1996 with a grid suited to a game generating far more loot than any player could keep. Constraint gave the drops meaning, because an endless item generator with no limit produces no decisions at all. Capcom's Resident Evil arrived the same year using a slot-limited variant for tension rather than economy, so two unrelated genres reached for the same restriction at almost the same moment.
Friction turned inventory management into gameplay, which players either enjoy as a puzzle or resent as clerical work; whole games are built on each opinion. Time is the direct cost, much of it spent shuffling rectangles instead of playing, and the mechanic scales badly once drop rates climb. Modern loot games often keep the grid as texture while removing its teeth through auto-sorting, stacking and effectively unlimited storage.
