Checkpoint respawn returns a failed player to a marked point inside the level rather than to the beginning, making failure a small setback instead of a session-ending loss.
Game records a position and a subset of world state at defined moments, then restores that snapshot on death. Where the markers sit, and what they restore, sets a game's actual difficulty far more than enemy statistics do. Frequent checkpoints turn a hard sequence into a drill; distant ones make the same sequence an endurance test, and that choice determines whether failure teaches or simply punishes.
Activision's Pitfall II: Lost Caverns in 1984 replaced lives entirely with checkpoint crosses in a large underground map, an unusual decision for an era of arcade-derived design. Cartridge games were being played at home, where no coin box set the pace and a long exploratory level needs some way to be attempted repeatedly. Removing the game-over screen was as significant as adding the marker.
Checkpointing is the main reason modern games can be both difficult and finishable, and its granularity is now a tuning knob applied sequence by sequence. It also changed what difficulty means, shifting it from resource attrition toward execution under repetition. Critics note that near-instant respawn removes the weight of dying, and designers respond with penalties, from lost currency to spent resources, that restore cost without ending the run.
