Bonfire checkpoints restore supplies and respawn every enemy when used, while death drops the player's accumulated currency where they fell and grants exactly one attempt to retrieve it.

Resting at a checkpoint refills healing charges and resets all ordinary enemies, so recovery and renewed difficulty arrive together. Dying leaves the player's currency, which is both experience and money, on the ground at the place of death; reaching it restores everything, while dying again on the way erases it permanently. Every decision to press forward is a wager with a visible stake and a known route back.

FromSoftware's Dark Souls in 2011 expressed difficulty through save design rather than through damage numbers, extending a structure the studio had used in its previous game. Placement of checkpoints became the actual level design problem, since the distance between a bonfire and a boss defines the cost of each attempt. Shortcuts looping back to a checkpoint are the reward for exploration, more than new areas are.

Loop demonstrated that tension can be manufactured entirely from persistence rules, and it made a specific rhythm of loss and recovery into a genre marker. Its costs are what players argue about: repeated walks back are tedious, respawning enemies punish curiosity, and the system asks for time as much as skill. Later games in the lineage have steadily shortened the walk while keeping the wager intact.
