Persistent High-Score Table
A persistent high-score table stores the best results and the initials of whoever set them, creating the first player identity to outlive a session and the first leaderboard.
Top results are held in battery-backed memory alongside a short string entered by the player, usually three letters chosen with a joystick. Table survives power cycles, so a machine accumulates a local history. Effect is social rather than mechanical, because the game becomes a standing record of the people who have played it, and beating a number becomes a way of addressing a specific stranger.
Atari's Asteroids in 1979 popularised entering initials after a good run, and the practice spread across the arcade almost immediately. Attribution is contested in detail, since earlier cabinets recorded initials too, but Asteroids is the game that made the ritual standard. Motivation was competitive and commercial at once, as a leaderboard gives a regular player something to defend and a reason to return to one particular machine.
Persistence of a name changed play from a private activity into a public claim, and it is the direct ancestor of online leaderboards, ranked ladders, achievements and profile pages. Costs appeared with the audience. Scores invite optimisation until the intended game is hollowed out, they reward time available as much as skill, and once tables went online they attracted cheating serious enough to require verification communities.
