Seasonal Battle Pass

A seasonal battle pass sells a fixed progression track for a limited period, releasing known cosmetic rewards as the buyer completes challenges and climbs tiers before the season expires.

Introduced 2013 Origin Dota 2 Developer Valve Later adopters 12

Buying the pass unlocks a numbered track, often a hundred tiers deep. Playing earns points toward the next tier, while daily and weekly challenges accelerate the climb. Rewards are listed in advance and visible from the start, and a thinner free track runs in parallel for everyone else. Everything is bound to a season of fixed length, and tiers left unclaimed when the clock runs out are usually forfeited.

Valve introduced the format for Dota 2 in 2013 as a compendium attached to its annual tournament, with purchases also inflating the prize pool. Fortnite Battle Royale is what generalised it into the industry default a few years later, so credit is genuinely split between the invention and the popularisation. Motivation was partly regulatory: known contents avoid the gambling comparison that loot boxes attracted, and a schedule produces forecastable revenue.

Randomness was traded for obligation. Players know exactly what they will receive and exactly what they must do to earn it, which is fairer and also more demanding, since the reward depends on playing enough before a deadline. Designers gained a lever for steering behaviour through missions, which can distort how a game is actually played. Whether the format respects players or rents their time is argued from both directions.
