Season Pass Bundle

A season pass sells future downloadable content before it exists, bundling an unspecified schedule of additions into one advance purchase priced below the sum of the individual parts.

Introduced 2011 Origin L.A. Noire Developer Team Bondi Direct forks 1 Later adopters 5

Payment happens up front and delivery happens over months. What arrives is defined loosely, sometimes as a number of packs, sometimes as everything released within a window, and the buyer carries the risk on scope, quality and timing. Content unlocks automatically as it ships. Discounting against the sum of the parts is the compensation offered for buying something nobody has finished making.

Team Bondi's L.A. Noire carried an early example in 2011 and is the release usually credited with the term, though passes for episodic content and music packs appeared in the same period, which makes the attribution soft. Motivation was financial rather than creative. Revenue could be booked earlier, a committed audience could be sized before content existed, and the announced schedule became a marketing asset in itself.

Studios gained a funded runway for post-launch teams, which is a genuine benefit when the alternative is disbanding them the week after release. Trust pays for it. A pass whose contents disappoint or slip produces a specific kind of anger, and several publishers have cancelled or refunded them. Structurally the model also pushes announcements earlier, since what is being sold is a roadmap rather than a thing.
