Coin-Op Difficulty Economy
Coin-op difficulty economies tune a game's challenge curve to the length of a paid session, ending most attempts within a few minutes so that continuing requires feeding the machine again.
Design targets a duration rather than a completion. Difficulty rises continuously, lives are few, and the ceiling is set so an average player finishes in two or three minutes while an expert is permitted a long run that works as advertising. Operators adjust the settings physically, through switches inside the cabinet that change starting lives and bonus thresholds to suit a particular location's takings.
Taito released Space Invaders in 1978, where a hardware limitation produced the effect almost by accident: as the player destroyed aliens, the machine had fewer sprites to draw and the survivors accelerated. Pressure rose exactly as the field emptied. Whether or not that acceleration was intended, the lesson was read clearly across the industry, and deliberate tuning toward the next coin became standard arcade practice.
Monetisation authored the difficulty curve, and the habits it produced outlived the cabinet: continue timers, finite lives, and a general sense that failure carries a price. Home conversions inherited curves designed for a coin slot and often felt punitive without one. Later free-to-play economies rebuilt the same relationship with an unlimited slot, which is why arcade tuning is usually the first ancestor named when those systems are examined.
